Whitdel Arts was originally located in the Whitdel Apartments, with free rent from Southwest Solutions and most of the utilities also paid by Southwest Solutions.

Tucked away in a neighborhood better known for Mexican restaurants, there is the Whitdel Arts, "a satellite branch of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) located in the lower level of the historic Whitdel apartment building in southwest Detroit," according to the website.
Last night was the opening reception for the 2011 Actual Size Biennial, featuring small pieces in a variety of mediums. Artist Jack O. Summers was very impressed by the picture book Traveling with Monsters by S. Kay Young. "I love it! The images are wonderful," Summers said. He also has work in the show himself.
Like the Small(er) Show at Detroit Artists Market a couple of months ago, this show also packed the gallery. Although there were not as many openings last night as there were on Friday night, the turnout at Whitdel demonstrates the growing recognition of this gallery that is outside the usual orbit of gallery hoppers.
